Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bi-Amp Bass Amplifier (300/100 Watt) Review

Gallien-Krueger 800RB Bi-Amp Bass Amplifier (300/100 Watt)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was actively playing shows as part of a succession of bands for about an eight year span of time, and for about six of those years the 800RB bass head was my rig. It went through several levels of hell; clubs, outdoor shows, extreme temps, extreme moisture, etc... and it was a steady and dependable performer. I never had to have it serviced and it never quit on me.
While the amp is rated at 400 watts total, it should be made absolutely clear that this is really two amplifiers (300/100) in a single unit. It states clearly in the manual that you should never hook up both amplifier outputs to the same speaker. There's a pre-amp section that includes a basic EQ, a switchable effects loop out/in, a master volume/gain, and a footswitchable boost(loudness) adjustment as well. The boost adjustment is great because it can provide you with some pretty good distortion options.
The style of music I was mainly playing was hard rock/metal, but also used the amp for industrial/electro-rock and a little bit of jazzy lounge music. The 800RB has just enough adjustments available via the EQ section and the preamp/gain knobs so that it can deliver a wide variety of tonal options. It truly excels, however, when you're going with straight ahead rock. I liked to set mine with the "California Smile" EQ (boost the 60hz and 4khz and "scoop" out everything else...) which the 800RB was able to accomodate perfectly.
I was using the dual amp configuration to run both a Mesa/Boogie 4x10" PowerHouse 8ohm cab along with a 1x15" of indeterminate make/model. In the bigger clubs with weak or non-existent PA's, I did have trouble with filling the room, but I think that had more to do with my speaker setup than the amplifier itself. I was able to keep up with the guys that were running the Ampeg 215/SVT rigs, and the additional bite of overdrive distortion was similar to what they could acheive with their tube amps.
One thing though - after I purchased the amp I immediately secured it in a dedicated hard plastic roadcase with enough room to breathe on top and underneath, and I think that made all the difference in the world regarding it's durability.
I would definitely recommend this amplifier to anybody that wants a fairly simple, maintenance-free, and durable bass amp head to play in the practice space or take on the road. The 800RB has a well-deserved reputation as one of THE choices for 'Gig Warriors', and having used one as the heart of my rig for more than 1000 hours of playing and full volume practice, I can attest to it's ability to back up the reputation.
However, if you're looking for an amp head that is clean and pristine enough to use as a recording rig, you might want to go with something a little more high-end, because the one issue that I encountered with this amp head is that it has slightly 'noisy' electronics that can create some sound issues when you're using it plugged straight into the board.
So, while this amp may not have as many knobs or pretty lights as some of the other amps out there, it's got enough functions/adjustments to satisfy most bassists, and it's purpose-built so that it will never break.

Gallien-Krueger 1001 RB-II Bi-Amp Bass Amplifier Review

As with most bass players, I started with economy gear. I very quickly learned how dramatic a difference high-end gear can make in the quality of your sound (when I upgraded to a Gallien-Krueger 115RBH Bass Guitar Cabinet (400 Watt)). The clarity of the sound when compared to my first cabinet ( Hartke VX410 Bass Guitar Amplifier 4x10 Cabinet, 400 watts) was astonishing! I knew the same would be true for the amplifier, and this was confirmed when I upgraded from the my first amp (Hartke 3500C Bass Guitar Amplifier Head, 350 Watts) to this Gallien-Kruger 1001RB(II). It has amazing power, clarity, and flexibility of tone (which becomes increasingly important as you start to play with other musicians).
I feel like I have discovered the Holy Grail of Bass Amplifiers! Thank you Bob Gallien, for your original vision, and for all your many years of commitment to excellent and innovation in developing and producing quality bass gear beyond the call of duty. You have made the world a better place for musicians as well as all those who listen to music! I hope to eventually add the (Gallien-Krueger 410RBH/8 Bass Guitar Cabinet (800 Watt)) to the rig (when I start playing larger venues).

Geddy Lee Signature 4 String Bass (Black) Review

Geddy Lee Signature 4 String Bass (Black)
Average Reviews:

This is definitely a working man's bass. When I discovered that this would make it to market, I immediately requested my local music emporium to order one for me. One evening, after my lesson, I came out to the sales floor and saw this waiting for me. I plugged it in and played... amazing. I hadn't played anything like it, and I still haven't. Whether striving for a biting high or rumbly low, this thing has it. A couple years after purchasing, I saw Rush on tour, and he was sporting this fine axe.
I've owned my Geddy Lee bass for about 10 years, and I don't expect to get rid of it. Not only is it one of the best sounding basses around, but it plays better than any other four-string I've found. The vintage pick-ups (I think Fender goes too far with their use of "vintage") sound great, really high output, louder than the active Ibanez another bassist I know has.
I have other basses with maple necks and fretboards, but nothing else has this kind of snap to it. Slapping, soloing, or guarding the groove, this is my preferred instrument. Mine shipped with Fender Super Bass strings. Don't hesitate, just buy this and think about it later; you will not be disappointed.

Behringer Ultrabass BXL3000A 300-Watt 2-Channel Bass Workstation Review

Behringer Ultrabass BXL3000A 300-Watt 2-Channel Bass Workstation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this amp and put it to work the very next day. I played Bass in a small church service full of 250 or so teens, next to a drummer so loud that my ears rang. I could clearly hear the bass amp.
I used it mainly as a monitor and lined it into the house system, but the band was loud on stage and this amp was up for the task. I didn't even need to turn it to "11."
Add to this the funky Ultrabass and the included pedal, the inputs to mix a CD or MP3 to practice, and headphone jack - this amp rocks.
One caveat: there is a slight noise that can now be heard in the mix. I am going to have that checked. Even so, it hasn't dampened my enthusiasm for the BXL3000A.

Hohner B2ADB-BK Headless Electric Bass (4 String, Black) Review

Hohner B2ADB-BK Headless Electric Bass (4 String, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my bass and the clutch tuning knob was snapped off of the bridge due to poor packing. Amazon replaced it immediately and despite the second bass again being poorly packed, it arrive intact. This is a good bass. The bridge tuner adjustments are a little coarse compared to head tuners but they do work once you get used to them. The drop-D clutch does not seem to hold tune but since I do not use I am not worried about it. The bass sounds good, easy to play, much lighter than my Ibanez bass and the pre-amp works very well. The bass arrives with little to no instructions so you may want to research it before buying. I was able to get instructions off the internet. Make sure you unplug after playing or you will quickly kill the pre-amp battery if you leave it plugged in. Accessing the electronics requires removing several screws and the panel on mine was fitted so tightly I had to pry it off. A lithium 9V battery is recommended for longer battery life. The finish is very good. The neck is straight and it was pretty close to setup straight out of the box. I am enjoying playing it.

DeArmond Ashbory Bass - Black Fretless Mini Bass with Gigbag Review

This is a serious instrument that sounds like an upright bass or a bass guitar depending on how you set the pickups. It is great with the small size but big tone. Go to YouTube and search for and listen to some of the clips. I love my Ashbory! I love my Fender Jazz 1978 bass but as I get older it gets heavier. Ashbory is great to carry on a plane or camping. Play it through a Crate Taxi battery amp and you are ready to make great music!

I have a modified version of this instrument. The prior owner had converted it to a fretless by removing the frets (a risky move, but what the heck, it didn't destroy the neck, so,...). I love this instrument. With or without the frets, I can say that the neck feels great, and you can't beat that big fat music man-style humbucker for the tones it gives! If you find one of these, they're well worth the investment.

Traben Phoenix 4 - Blood Red 4-string Electric Bass Review

Traben Phoenix 4 - Blood Red 4-string Electric Bass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, looking for a lefty bass is always challenging. But when I saw the Traben Phoenix, I thought my prayers were answered - it was a case of immediate lust. However, my lust soon turned to disgust after I received my bass. It arrived looking beautiful, but I immediately discovered that the pot that controls the blending of each pickup was non-functional. Hanser Music, the distributor of Traben, would not allow me to have the bass looked at locally (there is no dealer within several hundred miles) and required me to send it back to them. It took over six weeks for them to repair the bass and get it back to me (requiring my purchase of a back up bass to continue my instruction) - and lo and behold when I finally got it back, there was a terrible hum when I plugged it in. Deciding to eat the cost, rather than have another interminable delay, I took it to a local repair shop where I discovered that the bass was not properly grounded. It cost me $40 to have it repaired. I will note that after a lot of back and forth with Hanser, they did reimburse me the $40. Unfortunately, the story does not end there - soon thereafter, the same pickup pot stopped working. I opened up the bass and discovered a very poorly soldered wire on the pot. I resoldered it myself and since them, the bass works properly.
While my Traben bass does look wonderful and sounds great, no one should have to worry about purchasing a new $600 instrument and having to deal with multiple problems necessitating the expenditure of much time and trouble. Traben manufactures the Phoenix in Korea and it appears that the quality control is very poor both in Korea and here in the US. While Hanser's customer service is very pleasant, it shouldn't have been that hard to check out the bass before both initial shipment to the dealer and before returning a defective product to the consumer. I would not recommend purchasing a Traben bass unless you have a local dealer who is prepared to stand behind the product.

Hofner Icon Series Vintage Violin Bass Transparent Black Review

Hofner Icon Series Vintage Violin Bass Transparent Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To qualify this, I have only been playing the bass for a few months at the time I'm writing this review...
I fell in like with the look of the Hofner Icon at the local Guitar Center and bought it. After a month of practice, lessons, and research, I happened upon a Hofner 500/1 vintage '63 reissue violin bass (hand made in Germany) at a hole-in-the wall music shop in downtown Chicago and fell in LOVE with it and it's amazing flatwound strings! I dropped nearly $2,000 and brought this beautiful instrument (such high quality that it should qualify as a piece of furniture) and returned my Icon with no regrets.
I may actually purchase another Icon soon and throw some flatwound strings (Hofners from North Coast Music) and use it for my travel bass when on vacation.
Here's what you need to know about the available Hofner basses:
ICON ($400ish)
-Made in China with Chinese electronics that can be quirky
-Fit and finish is adequate for the price point
-Regular roundwound strings with some fret buzz depending on setup
-Hollow body
-A pain in the butt getting a case sometimes! Go EBay or Amazon!
-Available in lefty (often with a case oddly)
CONTEMPORARY ($700ish)
-Made in China with German electronics
-Fit and finish adequate...slightly better than the Icon
-Has regular roundwound strings
-Hollow body BUT has a sound block inside giving it more sustain and a more modern, hence "contemporary" bass sound
-Has a neck bridge so you can slap on a McCartney-style Hofner strap!
-Available in lefty I believe?
-No case
GERMAN-MADE HOFNERS ($2,000 +)
-Hand-made in the Fatherland
-Fit and finish are amazing! Beautiful wood, stain, finish, feel
-Hofner (Pyramid) flatwound strings that give the most mellow "thump" and feel like butter!
-Comes with either a German vintage bullet case or flight case
-Available in lefty of course!

Stunned, awesome, and the greatest bass purchase I have ever made. I've owned many in 40 years of playing. I have a VM Jazz for three years now and loved it til
I picked this thing up. I guess I got lucky because this item right out of the box, came in ready to play condition and is beyond cool and sounds just like the P basses of old. Available for 350 everywhere on the planet I walked into Best Buy and saw it labeled for 270 dollars. The model on the wall had been beat up by countless players so I asked if there was one in the box. There was! I opened and inspected right there and Voila I bought it! I just played it on my first gig last night and boy o boy oboy......Bandaroake never sounded better.....now the VM is the backup and the looks from the band guys were wow....you paid how much? they couldn't believe it....not one defect on this one....PLUG and Play.....Motown songs never sounded better! I would give it a six star rating if I could....

Have owned one for over 13 years. Electronics are 1st rate, lots of Range, Play Jazz, Country or Pop and Slap. Stays in tune very well. The balance is good when standing or sitting. Craftsmanship and Finish are second to None. Frets easy and the sustain is excellent. Good pricing for a Made In California USA instrument.
No problems after 13 years of playing.while the ABS plastic case is good, It will warp if left in direct sun light, even for a few minutes.

For the money, this bass is fantastic. The Squier name is really getting better. The fit and finish are smooth, clean and classic. The action arrived perfect. A quick tune up. play around with the control knobs, and just absolutely love it. Lots of tonal capability, comfortable weight balance, beautiful finish. What more can you ask for? Maybe a HMV bridge. maybe an owners manual would be great. Came with nothing but the box.

Behringer BX4500H 450-Watt Bass Amp Head Review

Behringer BX4500H 450-Watt Bass Amp Head
Average Reviews:

This has better tone than my 500 watt Hartke.
The 2 button foot switch is hooked to useful effects.
I like the Ultrabass set below about 2, and leave it off most of the time. The Shape sounds good on about 5.
I skip the bright and deep, they add more noise than good tone.
Set the gain on 6 for my Fender Jazz with S1 button. The guitars tone controls seem more versatile than with my old amp.
I set output on 2 for practice with lots of punch. Set it on 3 if you want to blow cats across the room, it can play gigs with room to spare. I have it hooked to a Hartke 15VX and an Avatar 2 x 12. The DI out sounds pretty lifeless compared to a mic in front of the speaker for recording and PA. This is a great sounding, high powered amp.

The ULTRABASS BX4500H is a massive 450-Watt bass amp head with patented Dynamizer technology, boasting a switchable Ultrabass sub-harmonics processor for unbelievable low-end power and a revolutionary Shape filter for extreme sound range. Since flexibility has become a particularly important factor in the music business over the past few years, modern bass players need to offer a broad range of sounds, but should still be able to play in different kinds of settings at short notice: home recording, studio or live concerts.

This is why you get a complete set of useful functions that are simple enough to be operated intuitively and quickly. An extremely musical 5-band EQ with "Bright" and "Deep" functions gives you the ultimate in tone-shaping. There is an integrated limiter and an active, temperature-controlled cooling system for ultimate protection. You also get a vintage-style VU meter for precise signal level control. A dual footswitch for Ultrabass and Shape functions is included, and there are 3 speaker outputs on 1/4-inch jack and touch-proof connectors compatible with Neutrik Speakon. With this amp, you can certainly rock the stage like a pro.
Patented Dynamizer technology When it comes to amplifying the signals delivered by electric instruments, you've got to separate the wheat from the chaff. Unlike mixed or mastered signals, electric instruments usually deliver extremely high signal peaks which, when raised in gain, produce nasty distortion. How an amplifier responds to these signal peaks can therefore be seen as one of its most essential quality features.
Many manufacturers use limiters preceding the power stage to limit dynamic signal peaks. However, the problem is the preamp, which is why Behringer equipped the BX4500H with unique Dynamizer preamp circuitry that gives you a lively and punchy sound with signal peaks--even if the amp reaches its power limits. Extreme signal peaks are limited effectively while the average level and hence the power of the overall signal is raised. The sound gets more vivid and powerful in character, without any unmusical distortion. With its limiter in the power stage it is virtually impossible to overdrive the ULTRABASS BX4500H.
Shape Function The Shape function on the BX4500H provides a revolutionary type of filter that you can use to modify your bass sound in full detail. Extreme filter settings will give your bass sound more power. For example, if you want to play a live bass solo but the sound doesn't cut through, set up a solid basic sound plus a very distinctive solo sound using the SHAPE filter. Connect your footswitch to control the SHAPE filter and you're all set.
The Shape filter is also handy for using two different bass guitars. Maybe you want to change from a jazz bass to a fretless bass, and vice versa--two instruments with a completely different sound. Use the Shape filter for your fretless sound, and the basic sound for the jazz bass. Problem solved.
Ultrabass Function Extremely low bass sounds playing one octave below the lowest available bass guitar frequency are quite trendy in current music productions. Often, you can do this in studios only, because most bass amplifiers have no sub-harmonics function. Not so with your BX4500H: the ULTRABASS processor gives you the ultimate tool to shape up-to-date sounds.
You'll be surprised how deep your bass can sound with the ULTRABASS function of your BX4500H. Extreme settings can be particularly interesting if you want to give your sound some flavor in the treble range. By the way: when you use the SHAPE filter set to a low cut-off frequency (which is a nice setting for growling sounds), but feel that there's not enough power in the bass range, the sub-harmonics processor will be there to help you: even though the sound is still growling, now it has much more depth.
The ULTRABASS function can easily be switched on and off via the supplied footswitch. This allows you to fine-tune certain passages only.
