Hofner Icon Series Vintage Violin Bass Transparent Black Review

Hofner Icon Series Vintage Violin Bass Transparent Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To qualify this, I have only been playing the bass for a few months at the time I'm writing this review...
I fell in like with the look of the Hofner Icon at the local Guitar Center and bought it. After a month of practice, lessons, and research, I happened upon a Hofner 500/1 vintage '63 reissue violin bass (hand made in Germany) at a hole-in-the wall music shop in downtown Chicago and fell in LOVE with it and it's amazing flatwound strings! I dropped nearly $2,000 and brought this beautiful instrument (such high quality that it should qualify as a piece of furniture) and returned my Icon with no regrets.
I may actually purchase another Icon soon and throw some flatwound strings (Hofners from North Coast Music) and use it for my travel bass when on vacation.
Here's what you need to know about the available Hofner basses:
ICON ($400ish)
-Made in China with Chinese electronics that can be quirky
-Fit and finish is adequate for the price point
-Regular roundwound strings with some fret buzz depending on setup
-Hollow body
-A pain in the butt getting a case sometimes! Go EBay or Amazon!
-Available in lefty (often with a case oddly)
CONTEMPORARY ($700ish)
-Made in China with German electronics
-Fit and finish adequate...slightly better than the Icon
-Has regular roundwound strings
-Hollow body BUT has a sound block inside giving it more sustain and a more modern, hence "contemporary" bass sound
-Has a neck bridge so you can slap on a McCartney-style Hofner strap!
-Available in lefty I believe?
-No case
GERMAN-MADE HOFNERS ($2,000 +)
-Hand-made in the Fatherland
-Fit and finish are amazing! Beautiful wood, stain, finish, feel
-Hofner (Pyramid) flatwound strings that give the most mellow "thump" and feel like butter!
-Comes with either a German vintage bullet case or flight case
-Available in lefty of course!

Hofner Icon Series Beatle Bass Right Handed Bass with Hardshell Case Review

Hofner Icon Series Beatle Bass Right Handed Bass with Hardshell Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like most of us, I can't afford over $2000.00 for a German made Hofner. Instead found a great deal on this Hofner bass/case combo and jumped on it. Sure I read the reviews that put it down as a very cheap Chinese (actually Indonesia)wannabe. It is not hand made in Germany with German wood and electronics. It is made to Hofner specs with the same materials.. just not german and the electronics are of oriental origin. The bottom line is it looks like a Hofner, plays like a Hofner, it IS a Hofner!
Starting with the case, it is hard shelled, plush lined and fits the bass like a glove. There is a compartment under the neck for the strap, cord and anything else you might want to take to a gig and is lockable.
The bass itself is absolutely beautiful. The clearcoat is so shiny and smooth that the bass actually looks wet. The stock strings are the only issue I had but knew that before I bought the bass. I replaced them with La Bella for Hofner short scale strings and also replaced the volume knobs with Hofner tea cup knobs. Also removed the pick guard. Did all my own adjustments and it plays very well. The action was fast right out of the box. The neck is narrow and comfortable. I also own a Fender P Bass and a Rogue VB100. The Hofner has that unique hollow body sound sound and clearly the easiest to play. It is my primary bass and I highly recommend it for anyone from seasoned pro to the novice and beginner.
I am aware that there have been complaints about the quality control of this bass but none of that is in evidence with the one I own. I just love this Bass!!

Hofner Icon Series Beatle Bass Guitar - Sunburst Review

Hofner Icon Series Beatle Bass Guitar - Sunburst
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a professional musician and university music professor, I have pretty high standards. Of course, I'm primarily a woodwind performer, and although I've fooled around with guitar since high school, this was my first electric bass guitar. Hofner's Icon model has cheaper wood and generally some cheaper parts than their professional level basses, but I love this instrument. The short scale is perfect for moving seamlessly between guitar and bass and makes technically demanding passages easier than on a standard scale bass. I've gotten to the point where I've taken the bass to parties and played a couple of paying gigs with it. The intonation is pretty good, although it is not up to the level of professional instruments. The main issue is that 1st fret notes are very sharp. The movable bridge is a little tricky to work with, too. I found that I just had to find a spot where there was a fairly decent blend of string height, string angle, and scale for the intonation. Generally, the switches and pickups seem to work pretty well, although the switches get just a little flaky when the temperature and humidity conditions change rapidly. I find that the strings that come with it work ok, but that flat wound strings really improve it, making it useful for rock and jazz playing. I did have to do some minor work on the frets, since two of them were set a little lower than the rest, but just a little adjustment eliminated fret buzz. It's no pre-CBS Fender, to be sure, but for less than $400, it looks good, sounds good, and is lightweight and easy to play.

Lyon KISS - 2006 Autographed Electric Guitar, Limited Edition Review

Lyon KISS - 2006 Autographed Electric Guitar, Limited Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For an entry level guitar, this one is much more solid than many other brands (first act, yamaha, even some fender in my book). But, you get what you pay for. This is a Lyon by Washburn guitar, the beginning line of Wasburns, and not even on their website. But, this guitar has decent sound at a decent price. It is also a collectable, signed by Paul stanley of kiss, 7500 made. It is not going to be a great guitar, but it will do for beginners, and can be upgraded in time if wanted. A great collectors item for kiss fans as well. Check it out. Also available in this 2006 autograph line are 3 other guitars, one by the Weezer guitarist, one by the All american rejects guitarist, and one by Fallout boys guitarist. Included in all are 3 picks, a strap, and the authetic autograph proof card, and a poster on the box.

Schecter Diamond-J Electric Bass (3-Tone Sunburst) Review

Schecter Diamond-J Electric Bass (3-Tone Sunburst)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
very pleased with this recent arrival. finish is flawless, heft is good and nicely balanced, and neck is thick in the j bass style with the much preferred maple fretboard. pups produce a nice variety of tones, especially using the neck side pumping out loads of rich bottom. action is outstanding- had to raise the g just slightly to elimate some buzz but that's it. no sunburst on the back but who cares? strings are d'addario round wounds, pick-ups are passive like i like it, and neck is absolutely straight. made in china, not korea like earlier models. couldn't ask for more in this price range (not a return or second).

Gretsch Guitars G6199 Billy-Bo Jupiter Thunderbird Electric Guitar (Standard) Review

Gretsch Guitars G6199 Billy-Bo Jupiter Thunderbird Electric Guitar (Standard)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It seems as though everyone wants a Billy-Bo....likely because it originally was made for Bo Diddley who gave an original to Billy Gibbons of ZZ geti-up....A typical Gretsch, it plays well, stays in tune and has a robust, hearty tone. Made in Japan! MSRP is reported to be in the 3,800 range which is custom, domestic pricing and discounted down to $2,695....Problem is, it stays in perpetual backorder...I love this guitar and recommend it for pros who want to improve their sound....It dresses well even if you do not have a long beard. If you can get one,. try it first then buy...comes with a hardshell case which is beer can proof for those gigs in saloons which have no chicken wire protection! ...wish it came in other colors...

Fleabass Junior 3/4 Size Bass Guitar Blue and Orange (Water) Review

Fleabass Junior 3/4 Size Bass Guitar Blue and Orange (Water)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this bass for travel. It's shorter than a short-scale bass,
weighs only 7 lb. and is snug in its bag and carries very easily.
It plays very nicely and does the job as an enjoyable playable travel
bass. It's not a bass I'd play much more than that, however, as it's
not of super quality, but good quality. However, it is half the price
of the Traveler II Bass which sounded remarkably awful and felt awful
to play and was nearly impossible to tune or restring. For a kid or
easy on-the-go, this bass is a perfect solution.

G6118T Limited Edition 125th Anniversary Hollowbody Electric Guitar (Jaguar Tan) Review

G6118T Limited Edition 125th Anniversary Hollowbody Electric Guitar (Jaguar Tan)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After having just recorded with this guitar, I still can't decide if it is more beautiful to listen to or to look at... the pictures simply do not do it justice, this is an absolutely beautiful combination of super cool design and solid workmanship, but the sounds it can make are just as breath-taking. Much warmer and fuller than other Gretsch hollowbodys when playing jazz, but able to stand up and shout like a Gretsch on blues or rock when it needs to.
In one word this is a "keeper," an instant family heirloom that your grandkids some day will be inspired to learn to rock it like their old man's old man!!
(at least that is what I'm hoping for)

Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar Walnut Stain Review

Gretsch Guitars G5122 Double Cutaway Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar Walnut Stain
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What a versatile guitar!
It does possess that Gretsch sound. Has the clarity to be a ringing 'And Your Birds Can Sing,' or 'Crossroads' with equal aplomb.
Comes with the standard rebellious Gretsch knob layout - three volume, including a master and one tone.
The cost cutting efforts are not hidden. Open tuners. The base of the floating bridge is rosewood but I would question the quality of the wood used.
The Bigsby tailpiece, while wonderful to use is fiendishly trying when you restring. Until you get used to it, that is. A pre-bend in the ball end of the string goes a long way to easing the task. Bigsby must have been a saddist.
The capacitor in the tone circuit is too restricted, the rolloff is intense.
The pluses?
They are many.
Tone as I mentioned.
The guitar is very light, a full hollowbody, not a semi hollow body.
Thick binding.
A flat neck - or at least it feels flat. A look at the spec sheet shows there is a tapering radius applied.
Well done!
Relatively inexpensive - I paid $630 out the door.
Do yourself a favor an affix the bridge to the body. If comfortable, pin it or in my case, I used violin bow rosin to create more friction and keep the bridge in place.
I bought it about a month ago and have not put it down. My other guitars are getting suspicious.
