Sledgehammer 4 String Bass (Ash) Review

Sledgehammer 4 String Bass (Ash)

I have a modified version of this instrument. The prior owner had converted it to a fretless by removing the frets (a risky move, but what the heck, it didn't destroy the neck, so,...). I love this instrument. With or without the frets, I can say that the neck feels great, and you can't beat that big fat music man-style humbucker for the tones it gives! If you find one of these, they're well worth the investment.

Hofner Icon Series Vintage Violin Bass Transparent Black Review

Hofner Icon Series Vintage Violin Bass Transparent Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To qualify this, I have only been playing the bass for a few months at the time I'm writing this review...
I fell in like with the look of the Hofner Icon at the local Guitar Center and bought it. After a month of practice, lessons, and research, I happened upon a Hofner 500/1 vintage '63 reissue violin bass (hand made in Germany) at a hole-in-the wall music shop in downtown Chicago and fell in LOVE with it and it's amazing flatwound strings! I dropped nearly $2,000 and brought this beautiful instrument (such high quality that it should qualify as a piece of furniture) and returned my Icon with no regrets.
I may actually purchase another Icon soon and throw some flatwound strings (Hofners from North Coast Music) and use it for my travel bass when on vacation.
Here's what you need to know about the available Hofner basses:
ICON ($400ish)
-Made in China with Chinese electronics that can be quirky
-Fit and finish is adequate for the price point
-Regular roundwound strings with some fret buzz depending on setup
-Hollow body
-A pain in the butt getting a case sometimes! Go EBay or Amazon!
-Available in lefty (often with a case oddly)
CONTEMPORARY ($700ish)
-Made in China with German electronics
-Fit and finish adequate...slightly better than the Icon
-Has regular roundwound strings
-Hollow body BUT has a sound block inside giving it more sustain and a more modern, hence "contemporary" bass sound
-Has a neck bridge so you can slap on a McCartney-style Hofner strap!
-Available in lefty I believe?
-No case
GERMAN-MADE HOFNERS ($2,000 +)
-Hand-made in the Fatherland
-Fit and finish are amazing! Beautiful wood, stain, finish, feel
-Hofner (Pyramid) flatwound strings that give the most mellow "thump" and feel like butter!
-Comes with either a German vintage bullet case or flight case
-Available in lefty of course!

I thought this was a true German made Warwick but it's just a glorified China or Korean made Rockbass. Description is not very clear. Buy the similar Rockbass one listed for only $3xx when it's in the Gold Box every once in a while...

Squier by Fender Classic Vibe Precision Bass 60's, Sonic Blue Review

Stunned, awesome, and the greatest bass purchase I have ever made. I've owned many in 40 years of playing. I have a VM Jazz for three years now and loved it til
I picked this thing up. I guess I got lucky because this item right out of the box, came in ready to play condition and is beyond cool and sounds just like the P basses of old. Available for 350 everywhere on the planet I walked into Best Buy and saw it labeled for 270 dollars. The model on the wall had been beat up by countless players so I asked if there was one in the box. There was! I opened and inspected right there and Voila I bought it! I just played it on my first gig last night and boy o boy oboy......Bandaroake never sounded better.....now the VM is the backup and the looks from the band guys were wow....you paid how much? they couldn't believe it....not one defect on this one....PLUG and Play.....Motown songs never sounded better! I would give it a six star rating if I could....

Sterling by Music Man RAY35-HB Bass (5 String, Honey Burst) Review

Sterling by Music Man RAY35-HB Bass (5 String, Honey Burst)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did not have the purchase experience as the other person did... I bought my at Guitar Center so it wasn't dented or anything. This is an amazong bass. I know off-brand things leave a bad taste in people's mouth, i.e. what Squire is to Fender, or what Epiphone is to Gibson. Even though this is an off-brand to Ernie Ball, EB still retains much of its control over production so in the end you get a quality product. My other bass is an Ibanez Iceman, which in my opinion sounded far better than most of the Fender and Epiphone basses I tried. Anyway, when I found Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray, it was a whole new world that opened up for me. But the sticker shock was dissapointing. Well, now they have Sterling by Music Man, and it's just as impressive at half the price. The comparison between my two basses are night and day, my Ibanez Iceman sounds beefy but I have to turn it up full volume. My Ray35 is louder than the Iceman at half volume. It's also nice having the active pre-amp EQ. The only downside was that the neck was too tight and I had a lot of string buzz. The good thing about these basses is that it is really easy to adjust, they have this metal rod that you use to turn the wheel and that's it. No unscrewing, no removing the strings, no detuning, just twist the little wheel.

Washburn Taurus Series T12MBL Electric Bass Review

Washburn Taurus Series T12MBL Electric Bass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Washburn Taurus T12 bass to lay down my own bass tracks for home recording, and it has far exceeded what I expected to get for $116. I could tell this was a deeply discounted, quality instrument right away. It's nicely balanced, solidly constructed yet light, has great string action, and sounds fantastic. I would have no problem gigging with this bass, and it looks great too.
There are two knobs, one for volume, the other for tone, and two pickups that respond very well, offering a range of sounds, from low and soft, to a sharp "bite", depending on how the strings are picked. Obviously, if you're a professional musician, you'll want something much more expensive and handcrafted, but for a musician on a budget, the T12 is several notches above other basses I've tried in the same price range.

Washburn Taurus Series T12NS Electric Bass Review

Washburn Taurus Series T12NS Electric Bass
Average Reviews:

Plays very well, only complaints are in finish - obvious mismatched wood at foot of neck on front and back, needs finish on back of neck or wood needs to be polished smoother. Tone is good, tuning keys and electronics(passive) are good quality. Excellent value ($105.00), could sell for quite a bit more. Would rate quality and value similar but a little bit lower than low-end PRS guitars.

The top 2 strings of the bass arrived with a buzzing, and after attempts to isolate the problem, I decided a new guitar shouldn't have that much work needed in fixing a problem. Sent it back for a refund.

At this price point you would expect much better quality and setup. Buzzing frets and other issues. I purchased a Rogue 5 string bass for $100 and it had reasonable quality and good setup. No excuse for this. Contacted Washburn and they basically said I should pay to have the frets fixed...right.

Hofner Icon Series Beatle Bass Right Handed Bass with Hardshell Case Review

Hofner Icon Series Beatle Bass Right Handed Bass with Hardshell Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like most of us, I can't afford over $2000.00 for a German made Hofner. Instead found a great deal on this Hofner bass/case combo and jumped on it. Sure I read the reviews that put it down as a very cheap Chinese (actually Indonesia)wannabe. It is not hand made in Germany with German wood and electronics. It is made to Hofner specs with the same materials.. just not german and the electronics are of oriental origin. The bottom line is it looks like a Hofner, plays like a Hofner, it IS a Hofner!
Starting with the case, it is hard shelled, plush lined and fits the bass like a glove. There is a compartment under the neck for the strap, cord and anything else you might want to take to a gig and is lockable.
The bass itself is absolutely beautiful. The clearcoat is so shiny and smooth that the bass actually looks wet. The stock strings are the only issue I had but knew that before I bought the bass. I replaced them with La Bella for Hofner short scale strings and also replaced the volume knobs with Hofner tea cup knobs. Also removed the pick guard. Did all my own adjustments and it plays very well. The action was fast right out of the box. The neck is narrow and comfortable. I also own a Fender P Bass and a Rogue VB100. The Hofner has that unique hollow body sound sound and clearly the easiest to play. It is my primary bass and I highly recommend it for anyone from seasoned pro to the novice and beginner.
I am aware that there have been complaints about the quality control of this bass but none of that is in evidence with the one I own. I just love this Bass!!

Fit, finish, adjustable EQ, EMG active creates a snappy tight little bass. The tone, ( adjustable) is awesome . Why I can buy a Schecter for over 60% off is beyond me, not the price which for a very different looking and playing professional bass guitar is great. Lovin' Mine!

Dean Edge Bass Guitar, Quilt, 4-String with Bartolini Pickups Review

Dean Edge Bass Guitar, Quilt, 4-String with Bartolini Pickups
Average Reviews:

Wow. Where to start....This bass is not your average Dean Edge bass. The Bartolini pickups make this bass shine. The bolt on neck is thin and fast. Finish is beautiful. I really have nothing bad to say about this bass. A bass that sounds this good at this price point is a no brainer. I replace the factory strings with D'Addario Chromes Flatwounds and it just sounds beautiful. At times you can get great deals on these basses, but even at 500.00 its sounds great.

Dean Edge 8-String Bass, Active Electronics, Classic Black Review

Dean Edge 8-String Bass, Active Electronics, Classic Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, I decided to buy an 8-string and learn how to play it, since I was already uver-used to playing the 4-string. You know,I wanted that high-end dominance that the 8-string provides.
This bass does all of that, and has active pickups to boot. Not that they are particularly the best active pickups (the battery dies out a little early for my tastes), but they get the job done - and can blast the hell out of a sound system with an impressive overdrive knob.
The tone is really good, by all means. Unlike the Schecter Stilletto 8, the first few frets don't buzz when you use them, and the thing maintains the octave-harmonics effect even when you use tapping or slapping effects. The strings feel really good on the fingers, and it's no problem to slide while keeping an even sound. The only problem I have is that, if one tries to use an octave string alone, it will not sound off as highly as the fat strings, which makes it a little less fun.
I would say that this is a worthwhile buy for those just starting on the 8-string, because it is reliable, has one of the best sound-qualities, and fits a good budget at $500.

Warwick Corvette Standard Electric Bass (4 String, Natural Bubinga, Fretless) Review

Warwick Corvette Standard Electric Bass (4 String, Natural Bubinga, Fretless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been playing bass for over 30 years, and without a doubt this is one of the best Fretless Basses I have ever played. As soon as i sat down and started playing, I knew this is a very special instrument, even the clerk knew by the way i looked at him that i would be taking it home that day.
Using round wound strings the high end tones were remenicent of Jaco, and the Ebony finger board gave the feeling and sound of an upright bass. The only downside is the weight of the instrument, but other than that I can find nothing wrong with this bass.
The look of the bass is badass, it has the old school look, with dark wood body and the Ebony finger board, it is truly a Jazz bassist dream rig. I played some Jack Bruce licks from the Cream days and was able to dial in a very close sound.
If you can afford it, buy it! this bass is destined to become a classic collector for the superb sound and look of the instrument.
