(More customer reviews)I have both the SE Custom and the Paul Allender and appreciate both guitars for
what they can do.
Both guitars because they are the SE series are made in Korea and have obvious problems.
The biggest being finger/fret boards, nuts, and lack of detail on the finishes.
The Paul Allender is a very powerful guitar with its EMG 81TW and 89R Dual mode (Pot split) active pickups that will give you pretty much any sound configuration you would want.
I have about 60 guitars that I have acquired over the last 20 years and have just recently purchased these two
as Paul Smith finally decided to enter the mid range guitar market (where all the money is) and stop relying on
the sale of 3K to 8K guitars.
I believe Paul has a way to go to catch up with people like Epiphone in producing flawless offshore guitars as
this does not happen over night and requires specific manufacturing processes be put into place and then strict line inspections be done on a constant schedule.
The first Paul Allender I got, I sent back because of a crack in the Ebony Fretboard which was very dried out.
I am waiting on the replacement as I write this review and will follow up on what I get (It's the purple one).
The Custom had to have conditioner applied to the Rosewood fretboard a few times to bring it back to life and
bring the frets even with the board edge which stopped the fret edges from ripping up my fingers.
The nut had to be ground down on the ends as it was to tall and caused problems with first fret barring.
The nut was off center and the fretboard was sticking out on one side at the top so I ground this down.
My point in all of this is that at one time you would expect small problems like I have mentioned from mid range offshore built guitars, but that has changed in the last 5 to 10 years and you can expect near perfection from a guitar costing $600.00 to $800.00 made in Korea or China, or Indonesia or wherever.
Actually, I have an Epiphone Nighthawk Custom reissue that puts either one of these PRS SE's to shame as far as fit and finish are concerned at under $400.00 and made in Indonesia.
