SKB Stage Five 5th Generation Professional Pedalboard Review

SKB Stage Five 5th Generation Professional Pedalboard

This board is cool, has cool features, and I like everything about it except I have 3 comments.
1) the power cable for powering the whole board (it's a standard power cord, available anywhere) is too short. Plan on buying a longer one or get an extension cord.
2) there is no way to put a should strap on the case
3) this thing, is reeeally heavy! ..even by itself with no pedals!
other than those things, its really an awesome board feature wise.

Jet City Amplification JCA20H 20 Watt Guitar Tube Amplifier Head Review

Jet City Amplification JCA20H 20 Watt Guitar Tube Amplifier Head
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This little thing has a bark! It is a ton of fun to use. The controls are very simple, and you can get a lot of lo- to mid-gain use out of it.
Keep in mind, this amp does not have the best of glassy cleans, but it is easily moddable (even some available direct off of Jet City's website for additional $$$).
I found the best and most fun way to play this single channel amp is to set a good lead/rythm tone, and then just roll back the guitar's volume knob for cleaner sounds. It has a lot of range and sounds great - and the price is 100% unbeatable. This is my low-wattage choice for a single channel amp for everything. Even good metal tones can be hit with a mild overdrive/distortion pedal
The only other amp I've played that compares is the Blackstar HT-5 which is 1/4 the power and $50 more for the head (it also has a bit more modern sound to it).

ACID Pro 7 Review

ACID Pro 7
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am very impressed by Acid Pro7.0. For the price [...] Direct Box) I believe that Acid Pro 7 is a must have upgrade that makes it a worthy competitor in the DAW market. Its simplicity and ease of use, and at the same time overall robustness are a reminder that a no frills design can increase productivity as I found myself happily zipping along and having everything on the same screen only a click away.
Pros
Uncluttered interface
Best loop stretching in the biz!
Tempo Curves
Real time rendering
Plug In bundle with Garritan, iZotope, etc.
Can use any 3rd party audio editor
Price Cons
Midi editing not very intuitive
No dedicated audio editor
As a long time Acid user (since ver. 2) I was very interested to see what the software had in terms of updates and improvements. Acid's time stretching and looping tools have always been flawless and in version 6 Sony added multi-tracking capabilities, thus making Acid Pro 6 a recording workstation.
According to Sony, version Acid Pro 7 offers improvement of the midi and tracking sections of the software as well as some welcome additions in terms of plugins such as Garritan Aria, Acid Pro Effects Rack by iZotope, Native Instruments Guitar Combos and Submersible Music KitCore. Sony have added an audio and midi mixing console, input busses, real time rendering and midi track freeze, features that a lot of users were hoping to see in version 6. There are also a few features under the hood that enhance the user experience as well and we'll get into these details later.
Installation
Acid Pro 7 requires the user to register online and to obtain a key code via a challenge and response system. Fairly straightforward and after registering I got my codes and was good to go in under 5 minutes. The software plugins take a bit longer to load, especially the Garritan Aria for Acid since it has quite a few sample files. Overall the installation was pretty forward and streamlined, no surprises there and I was good to go in almost no time.
Features
Sony has kept the standard features of the older versions, so right away it feels familiar. The standard Acid layout is still there, the looping portions are also still there with Beatmapper and the Chopper. They come with some new enhanced capabilities such as elastique time stretching and pitch shifting, which adds some extra level of detail and quality to tracks that require that treatment. The Beatmapper also has some new enhanced features which allow users to edit clip properties and Beatmap songs with varying tempos and time signatures.
Acid has also introduced a new feature called Tempo Curves which allows users to set the type of transition between two tempo changes, for example slow buildup to the new tempo. These features are controlled by fade types. As earlier Acid Pro users were complaining of the lack of metronome, Sony has added a robust metronome feature in version 7, with multiple configurations and countoff settings.
On the audio side Sony have added the much needed signal level meters missing from previous versions, track/clip/event switches including Normalize, Invert Phase, Mute and Lock. A much needed Mixer window has been added with customizable views.
There has also been some improvement to the Plug-In management window, allowing for customizable categories, also displaying by brand and a few other views, thus making it easier to navigate.
Acid Pro 7 has added support for additional file formats such as FLAC, AAC, AC-3 Studio and MPEG-2.
Acid 7 is Windows Vista certified so it is guaranteed to work on Vista.
The package comes with vast assortment of loop content, MIDI samples with over 3,000 ACIDized music loops, over 1000 MIDI files, 90 DLS instruments and 25 DLS-based projects. The bundled software includes the Garritan Aria player sample library which alone retails for about $250, an iZotope Effects Rack with plugins such as flanger, phaser, analog delay and dynamics, Native Instruments guitar emulation software valued at about $100, and Submersible Music KitCore drums for beat creation.
In Use
To test Acid I loaded a few raw .wav tracks of unmixed material, lined it up in the software and gave it a spin. The mixing process was already familiar since I've worked in Acid before. Version 7 of the software comes with a dedicated mixer, which in previous versions the user had to create from scratch and it took some time. Acid felt natural to use for mixing and in no time I had good working mixes of the material. Compared to some other DAWs I felt that Acid was more immediate and its layout was no-nonsense crisp and utilitarian, no cheesy color gimmicks like some of its competition, everything on one screen in front of the user all the time. Everything that I needed was there at a touch of a button. Tracking was also a breeze as now the software has tracking meters and several options when it comes to monitoring with effects and without effects. In some cases I used Amplitube 2 VST guitar plugin which ran without a glitch in real time, thus allowing me to record a clean DI guitar track and reamp later if needed. The built-in plugins performed well with little CPU overhead and the new additions to the bundle by iZotope and Garritan also added some needed depth to the package. I felt that Acid could use a better reverb plugin but that was easily supplemented in my case with 3rd party reverb plugins and my outboard effect which integrated nicely with the real-time rendering function. Real-time rendering can mix external sound modules in real time with your DAW's tracks and add that input into your finished mixdown files. So far I can't think of any other DAW that has this feature, so big kudos to Sony!
I enjoyed using the Tempo Curves feature and it did create a far more pleasant transitions and buildups than me having to program them in real time or in small chunks of tempo changes like I did in the past. In this case the tempo changes became smoother and more refined, and let's not forget - less time consuming!
When I had questions regarding some of the new capabilities of the DAW, Sony's tech support forum turned to be an invaluable asset. All my queries were solved rather quickly by tech. support and unlike some other software forums that are abandoned to the mercy of the user, Sony's techs were there helping users with a very impressive response time.
There were some minor things that seemed to be missing in comparison to other DAW software. For example the midi support could be better. I could get my job done with MIDI in Acid, but compared to the ease and effortlessness of Cubase and Digital Performer's midi editing it felt very backward. It has definitely improved from previous versions but still it is not very pleasant to work with. Compared to other DAW's there isn't a dedicated file editor so if you want to draw and alter the track audio files directly like in Sonar and Cubase - it can't be done in Acid but it isn't hard to open the file in a 3rd party audio editor or Sony's Sound Forge, which for some users could also be a blessing in disguise as you can use your audio editor of choice. A little quirk that I found annoying was the fact that I couldn't get the tracks to scroll with cursor when playing and recording as I was forced to keep the screen smaller sometimes than what I would've liked.
Sony have managed to improve on the file saving algorithm. Whereas old versions of Acid will jump mass dump files in one directory now the user has the option to do per project file folders, this saving file when you need to back up and no need to bundle files as in previous sessions.
I am particularly impressed by the wide media support in Acid. I didn't have a problem getting any possible file format imported or exported. A nice touch is the bundled mp3 encoder, something that one has to pay in order to get in other DAWs. I didn't need to render files for surround projects at this time but it is good to know that this capability is also available at no extra cost to the user.
I am very impressed by ACID Pro 7.0. For the price [...] Direct Box) I believe that Acid Pro 7 is a must have upgrade that makes it a worthy competitor in the DAW market. Its simplicity and ease of use, and at the same time overall robustness are a reminder that a no frills design can increase productivity as I found myself happily zipping along and having everything on the same screen only a click away.[...]

Line 6 Spider Valve 412 T Slant Cab Review

I ordered this with the matching tube head a few months ago. This thing is SUPER bright and thick. It comes loaded with V30 speakers, and those things are SIIIICK. No wonder they are the best speakers around. I couldn't imagine anything sounding better than what I hear from this thing. Sounds really great from the tube head at 16 ohm, also from the POD plugged into the head, and also from a little Laney combo amp I've got lying around with an 8 ohm out. No matter what I plug into this thing, it just sounds great. I HIGHLY recommend this cab!

Fender FM-53S Mandolin, Sunburst Review

Fender FM-53S Mandolin, Sunburst
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have tried more a dozen mandolins (5 in my possessions for a few weeks to few months).
It is solidly built and has really good sound, although the price is a bit higher than I expected (300$, expected around 200$) as I had another one, Ibanez with more features (trust rod + pickup + volume/tone knobs) for only 245$, brand new.
However, for acoustic only, Fender 53S is a very good one, the sound is sweet and loud. I bought it used (second hand) at 80$, spend about 10$ for new strings and a missing tuning button and I am ready to play. This is now my main mandolin for the last 6 months.
Recently, I bought a Mountain Tyler transducer for Amazon (24$ shipping included) and spent about 10 mins to install it. Now my Fender 53S is also electric, it sounds really loud when plugged in.

Carl Martin PlexiTone Pedal Review

Carl Martin PlexiTone Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are several good analog pedals that replicate ( not model) the sound of a high-gain Marshall tube amp:
The Sansamp GT-2, and Sansamp "British" pedals, as well as the Sansamp PSA 1.1 all do a great job of that.
The Sansamp PSA 1.1 is best for rack-rigs where midi control and signal-routing flexibility are necessary.
The other two pedals are ideal if you must run with batteries.
If you want PURE ROCKIN MARSHALL TONE, PLUS a great boost feature ( up to 20 dB) then this Carl Martin Plexitone pedal is the best I've have ever heard in 40 years of professional playing. It has the TONE and FEEL of my Customized Marshall 100 watt head (circa 1969) that was modified by Jose Arrendondo in the late 70's.
The CM Plexitone has its own internal power supply, which is absolutely necessary for the massive headroom you need for authentic Marshal tone. That also means you do NOT need a "wall-wart" to run it, but it means you must find an outlet for it.
The three footswitches are robust and spaced so my size 12 boots hit the mark without problems. Bright blue LED lights give instant indication of what's ON. The high-impedance input helps reduce signal loss from cables. In effect, this acts as a buffered "front-end" for the rest of your chain... and it's a damn good buffer too.
If you like your basic amp sound, but need a better preamp for the front-end and could use a boost for solos, this is the pedal to get.
Over the last couple of decades, my friends and I have used various CM products. All of them are great. They build everything like they care. They are good at what they do and it shows. CM pedals are worth the extra dough.
Other than lucky auctions, I got the best price on a new one from Prymaxe, a dealer in New Jersey. The shipping was fast with no problems. Highly recommended.

Gold Tone GT-500 Banjitar Banjo (Six String)

I agree with most of the first review here. I've had this model for two years and tried a lot of things to get the pick-up sounding like a banjo instead of an electric guitar. I'm afraid I haven't succeeded - however that's not put me off it. I love this banjo. After many attempts I discovered that Elexir Bronze 11s and an AKG instrument mic get a great banjo sound. The instrument loud and resonant as well.
Someone's going to make a proper banjo mic one day and make a fortune.

Shure P2R Hybrid Bodypack Receiver, H2 Review

Shure P2R Hybrid Bodypack Receiver, H2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While I think this little unit is expensive (mine was about $300 and didn't include the headphones - -1 star for price) it does work great. The singer already owned the transmitter unit so I only had to buy the receiver. This is saving my ears. I bought some Sennheiser CX200 Twist-To-Fit Earbuds that sound great to use with this. They are the in ear type that you put in very securely and they block outside noise. (One hint bring the headphone wire up over your ear from back to front and then put them in your ear, your lobe provides stress releif for the ear piece and they never come out). I'm a drummer in a 7 piece band and they knock my drums way down so that they are in the back of the mix (they are just picked up by other room mics not mic'd in the rehearsal space). I can now hear everything that everyone in the band is playing and I don't care how loud they make their amps (within reason). This is one of the best things I've ever purchased for playing in a band. I don't go home with volume induced headaches anymore. When everyone in the band gets one, the floor monitors (and attendant feedback problems) will no longer be needed and playing live should go just as smoothly as rehearsal.
One small problem with the unit is the lack of any good indicator for low battery problems. One time I couldn't get sound, checked the channel, checked the power light all good. The singer suggested I replace the battery and as soon as I did, problem solved. Keep a supply of 9Vs on hand for practice and the show.

Ion USB Turntable with Built-in CD Recording Review

Ion USB Turntable with Built-in CD Recording
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The ION LP turntable was much better than I thought it would be for the following reasons:
1) First of all, the sound through the headphones was nice, full, and deep - much better than I expected.
2) Recording directly to a CD made it much easier than dealing with software since I don't have the time to figure out how to effectively use the software (maybe later I will take the time to see if it makes it any better).
3) Recording to the CD was simple because the tracks are automatically separated. It also allows to manually separate tracks if for some reason the turntable missed separating a track (especially when an artist does not space out time between songs because they want the effect of a continual track).
4) It comes with a cover which many others don't (this may seem not important but it really is if you live in an environment where dust is prevalent).
5) Here's what I didn't expect which was a bonus - it comes with an internal hard drive to be able to record around 2 albums. This is very helpful because it allows you to correct any mistakes or skips that occurred before recording it on a CD. It also allows you to rearrange or erase any of the tracks very easily before recording it on a CD, so you can personalize your tracks compared to the album in a simple, easy way.
6) I am a musician and audiophile, so the most important thing to me is the quality of the sound that is recorded on the CD. Upon hearing the CD through my car CD player, the sound remained full, rich, and deep. This was very pleasing to me as I have tried other brands and the sound was always a disappointment, being very thinny and poor in quality.
6) Finally, the price on Amazon, along with free shipping makes it worth the money. I compared it to Brookstone which would have charged me $200 more in the store.
I personally believe that ION got all of the best features placed into this model which was more than I had expected. This is a good buy and the best model I have experienced so far. It is a 5 star product!

Don't get me wrong. I have enjoyed this ukulele and played it every day since I got it last August. It has a bright sound and and it's a pretty little thing too. However, 2 days ago the bridge just popped off. An examination of the undersurface shows that the bridge was glued on to the already finished body, with no special preparation for the location of the bridge. Glue was only seen on parts of the bridge. It was sloppy and showed a lack of attention to detail. I bring it up because I read another review elsewhere about this same problem. It's an easy fix and I will keep playing and enjoying it, but my next uku will definitely be Hawaiian.

EMG KH21 Kirk Hammett Active Pickup Set with Pickguard

This is the by far the best pickup set I have ever seen or played. The ease of installation is great. I had to rout out some of my body and had to solder the plug in jack, but it was easy (I am mechanically inclined so that helped). The sound is awesome, I love the 3 position switch, seperate volumes for each pickup and the tone. You can play both pickups and then adjust the volume so that you get more from one pickup or the other and then adjust the tone as you see fit. Possibility's are endless. My Fender HSS is a totally different and 100% better looking and sounding guitar. I went to Musicians' Friend and found the matching cover for the back of the my guitar. My Strat is Vintage Red Wind so this looks awesome on it.......I wish that I could find a black whammy bar to match the pickups and the look would be complete......Great job EMG and thanks to Amazon.com I saved over 20 bucks compared to Musician's Friend and it was delivered to my front door in about 5 days. Fishman AFX Pedal - Reverb Review

Fishman AFX Pedal - Reverb

This is definitely a high quality fx pedal! It's built like a tank and you couldn't ask for better quality reverbs - they are rich and lush and very "tweak-able." There are three reasons I give this 4 stars instead of 5:
1. This thing eats 9v batteries pretty quickly, quicker than most pedals I've used;
2. It didn't come with an AC adapter; and,
3. For $250, it should have come with the adapter and the kitchen sink.
That said, it's a very worthy pedal for acoustic reverb.
