Boss VE-20 Vocal Performer Processor Pedal Review

Boss VE-20 Vocal Performer Processor Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not a sound guru or anything close to that, but have been playing music for many years now and have learned a thing or two along the way.
I play the guitars and do back vocals on a copy band. We are all some sort of "retired" musicians from the 80's, and are now playing again since 2005 while we have other careers during the day.
This means we don't have much time to deal with complex issues, and will like to use any available time playing and performing instead.
Our rehearsals are carried out in our own studio (similar to a recording Studio), were we have all type of equipments such as PA's, speakers, monitors, mixers, effects, mics, crossovers, floor monitors, basically everything that may be needed. In any given day you'll get pretty decent sound from such kind of equipment but you'll also find yourself spending most of your time trying to be a sound engineer instead of a musician (unless you can afford a specific and qualified person for that task).
Those who have played in these type of studios, will know that even considering there is a pretty decent live sound, the vocals are sometimes affected by echo or too much or too low reverberation, delay, among other things, depending on the mixer setup as well as other aspects such as room dimensions, acoustics, etc.
Any detail will have an influence on the final sound mix and the end result.
Before I purchased the Boss VE-20 processor, the quality of vour vocals was good, but there were ocassional problems like feedbacks or hiss, sometimes noise or wrong delay rate, reverb or too much signal decay during rehearsals. The problem magnitude depended on how much our singer moved across the room or due to mixer parameter changes in certain songs, patches, etc, and these issues affected our performance consistency.
With the Boss VE-20 we are very satisfied because it features pretty decent settings for different singing styles (Rock, Blues, R&B, etc) and some of the effects are just amazing. Despite having a lot of other equipment at our disposal we are now only using the Boss VE-20 effects for the vocals and leaving all other parameters on the mixer at "flat" (0) position, just amplifying the signal through the PA. All the previous issues are now gone.
The quality of the VE-20 preamp has proven to be very good for us (Well our singer is very talented wich obviously helps pretty much)but all the effects are excellent as well.
The unit is very "user friendly" and easy to customize your own settings. As any other Boss pedal it is very robust and intuitive to use.
Effects such as harmonizer and multiple voices are just smashing and sound very realistic. It is amazing how different factory presets will perfectly adapt to different venues or scenarios (ie, Hall, Large Room, Small Room, Arena, Cathedral, etc). At Boss they have really done their homework by having professional sound mix parameters on each preset with perfect balance, and you can even adjust those and save them in a customizable patch.
To be honest we did not tried any other option before this one, as there are similar products in the market today, and therfore cannot stablish a fair comparison, but this one was very useful right out of the box and we feel like it was really worth the price paid.
In our case it has really helped solve a lot of complicated back vocals (those difficult to perform while playing an instrument) as our main singer is now doing most of these back vocals herself. This has also improved our overall vocal sound and now we spend more time playing and less time solving mixing problems on the sound console.
I won't be surprised if in the future Boss develops a bigger version of the VE-20, with more features, just like they have done with many other effects.
But for the moment I will highly recommend this Boss VE-20 Vocal Processor to any amateur and semi-pro band that want's to improve the vocal sound quality, inestead of having a band member becoming a part-time sound technician.
We are a couple of months away from using this on a live performace but for what we've seen so far, are pretty sure we'll be a success.

Tech 21 BSDR-DLX SansAmp Bass Driver Deluxe Review

Tech 21 BSDR-DLX SansAmp Bass Driver Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I play in 2 bands and I typically use 2 to 3 Basses on stage depending on the band (and the stage). I have always fought with having to dial in the right tone for each Bass every time I switch Basses. The Tech 21 BSDR-DLX SansAmp Bass Driver Deluxe solves that problem. I can preset the 3 main tones I need for 2 Basses and when I switch basses, it just takes a split second to hit the footswitch and I have the exact sound I need. This thing is very easy to setup and has a boatload of other features. Besides the obvious XLR Direct out, it also has a 1/4" Parallel out that is pre-tone controls so you can send your unaltered Bass signal to a Tuner or in my case, another amplifier. It also has an effects loop so you can have your effects setup and just hit one switch and you have the tone you need plus the effects you need. There's a small learning curve and you need some time for trial and error with the tone controls and the drive, level and blend controls if your customizing your own sounds. You can also just use the stock sounds that come pre-programmed and it sounds great. I've had many compliments from band mates as well as fans in the audience about my sound since using the Bass Driver Deluxe. I would definitely recommend the Tech 21 BSDR-DLX SansAmp Bass Driver Deluxe for any Bassist. I would also recommend you buy the optional Tech 21 DC2 DC2 Power Supply.

My pedals sound amazing. No dancing. Incredible. Only thing that sucks but that is just inherent in the pedal is how many cables are needed. Like 16 cables. It's crazy. But the pedal is true bypass which makes my rig sound so friggin good. I'm in the process of making my own cables because it's cheaper and I can get specific lengths. The Octa-switch is highly recommended.

Boss ME-50B Bass Multiple Effects with COSM Review

Boss ME-50B Bass Multiple Effects with COSM
Average Reviews:

I've used this for about 6 years now. the COSM Compressor/Limiter works amazingly well. Also there is a noise supressor, which works very well. All the effects sound great, and you can highly customize and save them. This unit is great for gigs. The base unit is very solid, the expression pedal is very solid also. Nothing about this unit feels cheap, it is heavy! It also has grips on the bottom to keep it from sliding around.
My only con is that "Octave Up" and "Octave Down" effect have a noticable delay, a few milliseconds max, but you can hear it if you are playing. Not sure if a listener would notice.

TC-Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G XT Vocal Effects Processor Review

TC-Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G XT Vocal Effects Processor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Much simpler to use than its big daddy, the VoiceLive2--but it's missing one crucial thing: the dedicated jack for the expression pedal to turn the harmonies on and off in live situations. If you use it sparingly, it's an instrument unto itself, and with the latching footswitch, you end up playing Riverdance on it. Also: in a band situation, it's very very sensitive to outside noise into your vocal mic. You need a completely polarizing hypercardioid, and you'll need to point the other amps away from it. In a crowded cavern-type gig? Forget it. It'll squeal on you.
Perfect for acoustic gigs where you don't run signal interference. Just a beautiful invention. Next time, TC Helicon, give us that expression pedal jack, and you'll have the best performance pedal in the business.

Fulltone CLYDE Deluxe Triple-Voiced Wah Effect Pedal Review

Fulltone CLYDE Deluxe Triple-Voiced Wah Effect Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The only good thing I can say about this pedal is that it has a true bypass; when not engaged, it does not alter your tone. However once engaged, it is the noisiest and most unfriendly pedal I have ever used.
There are two sources of noise. The first is a humming that occurs when attached to my SKB ps-45 pedalboard. This is a fully filtered and regulated power supply that is dead quiet with some Boss pedals that did not do well with adapters. I tried repositioning the Fulltone away from the board and any other electronics; the only way to get rid of this noise is to use the built in battery. Researching on the internet, I found this is not an uncommon problem, and apologists for this pedal are advising people that having to use a battery is a small price to pay for sonic bliss. (!?)
The other source of noise is high frequency hiss when engaged. When you depress the toe, the high frequency noise gets more pronounced. Depressing the toe is like progressively turning up the gain knob on your amp, but without getting any distortion, only noise. If you are playing vintage clean styles without any gain, it is noticeable and annoying, but might be passable for guys used to dealing with vintage gear and 60cylcle hum. Once you add any gain, the high frequency noise competes with the underlying tone for your attention. The noise is about as loud as the underlying notes, it is that bad!
I tried many things to troubleshoot: Repositioning the pedal, using another battery, adjusting the internal gain pot, using the ps-45 power supply directly to the battery terminal, other guitars, ground lift switch on amp, straight into the amp without any other pedals, etc. If internet searches did not show other people having various degrees of this problem, I would assume the pedal was defective, but I am led to believe that it just does not play well with other gear.
Here is the rub, if you go to Fulltone's website they claim that 90% of problems are caused by incorrect setup or _interference with other devices_. They have a reputation for poor customer service, (likely from guys like me who spent $250 on a top of the line pedal, only to be told that the problem is with something else in their chain. Warning: There is no phone# to call, all troubleshooting is through email.) This is a modern world full of complicated electronic devices, if you cant build a pedal that coexists peacefully in this environment, then don't built it! You may find that it works in _your_ basement, but imagine getting to your gig and finding out this is no longer a wah pedal but a distortion generator or AM antenna!
Regarding the tone, I have been demoing wah pedals and this one is uninspiring, or perhaps "too" vintage. The pedal travel is very broad, but the majority of tonal changes happen in a very small part of the sweep. You can find the area where the tonal changes occur, but it feels poorly designed. The three settings all provide varying degrees of increasing treble. (With the noise problems, the "shaft" setting is mostly unusable.) I wouldn't say that the three settings provide much variation in style or function, mostly just EQ. This pedal works best with rythmic rocking, and I did not find much ability to make subtle tonal "voice" changes for soloing, like I can with the Crybaby 535q. This is a vintage pedal all the way.
I have been playing guitar for 20 years so have a pretty extensive background in guitar gear, although I'm not a gear snob and feel that my expectations are realistic. I'm glad I had the time to fully take this pedal through its paces (troubleshooting, etc), because the store I bought it from has a 48 hour return policy. It goes back first thing tomorrow morning.

Fender Hot Rod Deville 212 Review

Fender Hot Rod Deville 212
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok lets agree together that fender has the most awesome clean sound on planet earth that all guitar amp manufacturers wish they have. And this Fender Deville 2x12 has it! however, the overdrive/distortion is really unuseable unless all you play for the rest of your life is twang rock and blues!
There are tons of musicians like me who play more than two styles of music, and on a weekly basis that really play gigs on the weekends and rehearse during the week. My complaint with this fender amp model is that,WHY PAY SO MUCH MONEY FOR THIS AMP AND USE ONLY ONE CHANNEL ,WHICH IS THE CLEAN CHANNEL. then ending up spending more money on 3 or 4 more solid state pedals to put infront of the clean channel and claim to have a great tube sound! uuh duh!
to prove my point, just google this amp concerning the modification on the overdrive/distortion channel and there's tons and tons on the web costing you and extra $400 more not including the shipping. If this was a one channel amp and the price is $400 street deal, then you will see 5 stars from me,cause its not made in the U.S.A.
there are other amps out there for $100 less "use" and some new! and both channels are useable and gig worthy out of the box without pedals. any used mesa boogie would do,peavey classic series, bogners, marshal DSL/TSL,egnaters,vOX ac30 etc... if buying a name brand is your thang cause you wanna be associated with the "club" your pathetic! The Fender frontman 65R has a much better overdrive/distortion at gig level and its not even a tube amp! aaaaaahhh!
TONE IS NOT A NAME BRAND IT BEGINS WITH YOU.....
FENDER CORPORATE! SHAME ON YOU!!! IF LEO FENDER WAS ALIVE TODAY MANY OF YOU WILL BE FIRED....
TO PROVE MY POINT FENDER HOT ROD DEVILLE 2X12 III IS JUST OUT AND IT HAD TO DO WITH THE DISTORTION CHANNEL! I GUESS FENDER POLICE WAS READING MY COMMENTS!

Wow, someone actually wrote as a review "My husband uses this in his band a lot...don't know anything about it...", now I have seen it all. Why would any body think that an endorsement like that could possibly be helpful in any way? Oh great, well if it's good enough for your husband then I'll take TWO!! Holy smokes, what else do you see him using that I might want? Thanks for nothing, luckily anyone else who is looking at this will surely know what this is and it goes without saying it's value and quintessentially uniquely classic moog filter sound. Thanks for nothing though, Little Lost Long Island Girl.

Eventide TimeFactor Twin Delay Stombox Review

Great Echoplex Tone in a Digital Device. I've been searching for this for years. You can use the Tape echo mode and set one delay to 350ms and the other to 500ms and tweak the tone from there. The output is in beautiful sounding stereo, you need two amps of course. The main advantage of this device/effect is the fact you can update the software via USB, in fact I suggest that it MANDATORY to do this before plugging in for the first time. It's not hard but it takes some effort at first. You have to go to their site and download some software then use the USB port. For the mac I could just use my printer cable for USB access. Then follow the instructions in the manual. The latest version is a beta but is wonderful. It has a buffer also which brightens the tone but the quality of sound is so good that you just have to adjust the tone on the amps, one extra thing, you should use the effect IN THE EFFECTS LOOP and set the switches to LINE. Worth the money and then some.

Korg KP3 Kaoss Pad Dynamic Effects Sampler Review

Korg KP3 Kaoss Pad Dynamic Effects Sampler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
first thing, i am no where near a pro with effects and recording equipment, that said, i have a long history with korg, and know from exp they make really good effects and at good prices. this machine is addictive. i want to let potential buyers know what you can do with the kaoss right out of the box, with about 20min w the manual. so it is basically an effects processer, instrument(drum machine and synth) and a sampler(w 4 banks a-d) i have a 400 disc player, and ran the rca through the korg line in, and line out into a 8 track digital recorder. and its just fun. i hit random play, and rarely get past the first 30 seconds of a song. the kaoss makes it very easy to sample any line in, and loops them, you can use up to 4 at a time, and you can save your fav samples on sd cards (2gb max, which you can buy on amazon for 7$,i like kingston) thats just the beginning, once you get a sample or samples, you have a hundred dif effects(phaser, grain, delays, re-verb common effects and sounds in the korg library) so you get a sample, you loop it back and you can manipulate it in a infinite number of ways. it also has bpm, a feature that syncs the beats in the machine to music from the line in, so it does the timing for you, and the beats loop in increments(4,8,16} the touch pad(which is huge) act as the knobs on effects and synths. so the clip its playing changes with every move of your finger. , every time you change the effect it opens a new world of the same sample.
now the drum machine and synth, there could have been more banks here and less effects, but some i imagine would say the opposite. i very much like that it loops seamlessly, and you can change the measures, but not as versatile as traditional drum machines. the touch pad responds very well, though when you tap faster as in a drum roll, it will hold up, but the sound is more in the held position anyway.and its somewhat user friendly, i say that cause i hate manuals, i just like to play, so i have figured out about 20% of this machine, and still i cant help to smile just looking at it. i have been looking into samplers for 15yrs and this is the least expensive, most fun, and easiest to use machine i have ever seen. . i, you can be silly, serious, either way it will impress(it will process anything w rca jacks, so there is no limit, there is allot of rhythm in the most common tv shows, radio programs, even the worst lp has sumthing sweet korg gives one year warranty,
update drum machine and synth work welly well w my microkorg, play one w your right and other with the left hand, ,my guitar through the mic input is really cool, you press hold on the effects, and you can change the sound completely after each riff, not so good w my bass, distorts at low levels

I'm running a pretty big pedal board with 10 DC (all 9 volts) and 2 AC powered pedals (line6 M9 and Digitech Whammy Wah) and this does the job flawlessly. Absolutely no noise or interference. It replaced my Voodoo Labs AC power and Pedal Power II. This unit is very well designed and well built. The information I found on line was a little sketchy and careful inspection of the pics online weren't consistent. I took a chance on buying this hoping it would power everything I needed and luckily it worked out.

Boss EBand JS-8 Audio Player Review

Boss EBand JS-8 Audio Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned a lot of Boss guitar products over the years. Before getting the JS-8, I was using a Boss ME-30 and a Korg Pandora PX4D. I never thought anything could replace my ME-30 until now. Simply put... The JS-8 is an amazing device! The jam tracks installed at the factory are top notch and you can add your own. If you run out of storage space on the included SD card, buy a high capacity SD card and store your entire music or backtrack library on the machine. Personally, the included jam tracks will keep me occupied for months.
The other impressive feature(s) are the guitar effects, which are based on the GT-10 effect engine. The designers included dozens of preset effects, but you can also make up your own. Now if you're a tone junkie like me, the JS-8 will allow you to dial in just about any guitar sound. The amp modeling is simply amazing! The first distortion patch I made included a Peavey 5150 amp model as the foundation. It took me about 40 minutes to set up my first patch because you can tweak so many sound parameters. After learning the interface real well, I could probably design an effect patch in under 15 minutes. The buttons and knobs make everything associated with the unit a cinch to use.
The only negative thing I could say about this device is the speakers. A lot of reviewers have also commented about them. But don't let this turn you away. The speakers are really a positive thing because you can take it on the road and play quietly in a motel or dorm room. You can also attach headphones and achieve satisfying results. The unit also comes with a USB cable that will allow you to use it as an interface with your computer. After setting the driver parameters, I was playing it through my Mixcraft software. And Boss, (unlike other companies out there), provide 64 bit drivers for both Vista and Windows 7. They also have firmware updates and add-on jam tracks. This was a very big selling point because I use Windows 7 x64. I should also mention that I saw several Mac OS drivers on their website.
Furthermore, the unit has RCA jacks on the side which allow you to play it through a regular stereo or boom box. That worked fine for me, but I had to try it with my Crate 4x12 amp. I simply ran a mini-stereo cable out of the unit's headphone jack, and added a 1/4" guitar adapter on the other end, which I plugged into the amp. With a little sound tweaking, I got VERY impressive results. So much that I dumped the ME-30 and just use the JS-8 with my main amp. I've even read about players running this thing directly into a PA system at gigs. From what I've experienced, I think that would work well because the JS-8 really shines when plugged into higher-end speaker systems.
So who would really benefit from this device?
1) Players who like to play along and improvise with good jam and rhythm tracks
2) Players who use computer software to write music and need a solid, versatile digital interface
3) Players who are real fanatical about their tone and don't mind digital/solid state devices
4) Players who need something relatively portable and easy to use
5) Players who will only buy things that are sturdy and well constructed
6) Players who need a new toy and can afford 300-400 bucks
The JS-8 has many other features such as a nice tuner and the ability to record. I suggest you check out some of the videos on YouTube and read the spec's on the Roland/Boss website. My personal favorites are Jack Thammarat's YouTube videos.

The owner's manual is not very good, TC could have done a much better job with it considering the price of the unit and the fact that it is full of switches and knobs. Still, after a short time playing around with the settings I was able to edit the factory presets and save my own, so it wasn't too bad. Some of the 30 factory preset sounds are not very useful, and others I loved and used right out of the box. I feel it has added a beautiful and clear sound. I only wish the tuner was more accurate, it's really useless.
Overall, I love my G-Natural, it has replaced all my existing pedals and simplified my playing setup.
