(More customer reviews)This guitar looks good.The carved top is comfortable and the guitar balances well..it feels and hangs exactly like a Gibson Explorer(I have one of those as well),and it is obviously made to be so,since it has the same scale length(24.75)and same upper half of the body,but here are my problems with this.
It is a "metal" shape...the guitar looks mean as hell,but the Dean pickups are very "not metal"...they are muddy with mediocre output.The bridge is just okay...and the headstock needs a string retainer to keep the strings from pulling sideways so hard on the nut...
I bought mine a while back on a lightning deal for $300 or so..I installed a string retainer,and I am finally getting around to swapping the pickups.The thing is,it is not even close to a match for the Gibson Explorer...and I would never pay $650 for it...the quality of this guitar is closer to a $300 - $350 guitar.The set neck and the finish are the high points of this thing.
A $650 import guitar should be comparable to others of the same price...for this price it should have a tonepros locking bridge and a set of Duncan JB/59 pickups,just like the LTD guitars in this price range.
This is the third Dean I have ever bought...the last one was a Dave Mustaine Signature V,and it was horrible and priced at $1000...horrible finish,horrible setup...Dave Mustaine would never play such a thing.
LTD has much better features in this price range.and don't be fooled by the signature models..those artists do not play the import line.
I have been playing guitar for 21 years now,and I am very serious about my guitars.The Gibson Explorer is much better and is worth the extra cash,but if you can only afford $650,look at the LTD line..at least they have good quality control and good pickups in this price range.
Truth is I bought this on impulse because of the lightning deal...$300 was a good price.
