I am absolute newbie with sight-reading experience from my former choir signing days! I wanted to learn to play a piano but did not want the tuning and expense of owning the real McCoy and then find i didn't want to play it. Especially living in an apartment there were the neighbors to consider as well as the premium floor space. Then I came upon the digital piano and this form solved all my problems in one quiet swoop. You get what you pay for, so do some research on your must have and budget. I just knew that i wanted a brand name in the world of music so the yamaha was a given. Now I was deciding between the 161 and the 141, both new models released on 2010. I finally went with the 161 for the better hammer action and that it offered the 128 notes polyphony. These might be minor issues for you, but my passion to learn made me decide that rather than upgrade later, I would splash out a little bit more now and have the piano for a lot longer. If you live in an apartment like me, the bigger speaker offered by the 161 was not a huge selling point as I practice most of time with the head phones. Only when I wanted to show piece a well practiced piece do I unplug the headphones. The size of this piano is awesome and compact in depth and with the 88 keys, you have the grand piano sound without taking up a lot of space.
Other features include a metronome than can adjust for different time signature like 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, etc; 50 preset songs were you can mute either the right or left hand and you can practice with it (this is really for the intermediate player, but nice to look foreword to! The piano defaults to the grand piano output, but you can switch to outputs that include the organ sound, harpsichord, strings. Also nice are the options to set various digital reverb ranging from hall, room, stage or off, which is the default setting. You could also manually set the reverb effect, which is worth doing as it does change the output quite considerably.
The piano also records up to two tracks, which for a beginner is a great way to learn which part of the score that you need to practice the timing a bit more!
The 161 has two headphone plug INS to allow for a second listener. There is midi that allows you to record more of your own music onto a computer (for composition) or you can down load music to the piano too.
The weights of the keys are superb and I am loving the experience, the sound and the accessibility the digital format offer me.
For the price it is reasonable. It is worth shopping around for competitive bundles. I did not end up buying my piano here. But I am so happy with my experience that I really highly recommend this model for beginners who are looking to progress to play full scores. For beginners, I recommend the Alfred's adult all in one course. It is by far the best series out there. For a novice in the world of music theory, My husband is really impressed with the progress that I have made in less than one week.
For those who have wanted to fulfill a dream, don't hesitate any more, this is the best option and you will love yourself for buying it. Happy playing.
Update: September 2010: Try the piano and keyboard software! it is another fabulous tool for those who are teaching themselves to play the paino. It is a great supplement to the Alfred's all in one adult course. read my review on the software. I even more happy with the purchase of this piano!

Lanikai LU-6 6 String Tenor Ukulele Review

Lanikai LU-6 6 String Tenor Ukulele

I could not be happier since buying my new Lanikai Ukulele. It is excellent quality, and very nice to play and to look at, and well worth the money. I think I have fallen in love with my little Tenor 6 string, whenever I play it I feel a healing power coming out from the inside of the instrument to my Head & Body. There is something very special about the sound and the tunes that come from a Ukulele. I hope you like my "Happy Tune" on the video that came from the inspiration of playing the Lanikai at home after just 3 days of owning it. Get yourself one and experience the relaxing gift and the peaceful vibe they produce......

Squier by Fender P Bass Special Left Handed, Antique Burst Review

Squier by Fender P Bass Special Left Handed, Antique Burst

For the money, this bass is fantastic. The Squier name is really getting better. The fit and finish are smooth, clean and classic. The action arrived perfect. A quick tune up. play around with the control knobs, and just absolutely love it. Lots of tonal capability, comfortable weight balance, beautiful finish. What more can you ask for? Maybe a HMV bridge. maybe an owners manual would be great. Came with nothing but the box.

QSC K8 Powered PA Speaker (8 Inch, 1000 Watts) Review

QSC K8 Powered PA Speaker (8 Inch, 1000 Watts)

I must preface this review by saying that I can't comment on using these powered speakers as a PA system; I bought a pair for my keyboard rig. They replace my old Mackie SRM450s, which I loved, but at 50+lbs each was getting tired of shlepping around (these are 27 lbs each). I don't miss the Mackies at all. The output from these is incredibly loud, crystal clear and punchy. They claim "1000 watts" but what's odd is that they don't give any qualifiers like you usually see ("+/- 3 db, 20 - 20K, @0.1% distortion"), just a plain & simple "1000 watts." Regardless, these speakers have incredible headroom. I've done gigs playing left-hand bass and am completely satisfied. Obviously, with an 8" woofer you will not get the lowest octave of bass. Also, they use a tuned port to extend the low-frequency response and there seems to be a "hump" at around 100 - 200 Hz that I compensate for with EQ.
One characteristic of the K8 is that the smaller woofer gives a wider dispersion angle. On stage, I set them up angled in a bit, so both the stage and audience is covered. Comments from the audience are that they sound great, and the musicians I play with also comment on how they hear me perfectly (this was not the case with the Mackies).
The K8 has two inputs (each of them a "combo" XLR and 1/4" jack) that can be used simultaneously, each with a level control and pass-through; there is also an output that has both inputs mixed. One of the inputs is switchable between mic and line level, the other is line level only. There are some other cool features, like the ability to turn the power light on the front of the speaker to a "limit" indicator - this tells you when the onboard DSP acts to limit the woofer's cone excursion. I've yet to see this light flash, despite playing some punishingly loud gigs!

DBX DriveRack PX Powered Speaker Optimizer Review

WOW! Think about this thing as a magic wand for your sound system. Even though I only know how to work the wizards, I can already hear the difference. The sound is nice and tight, and I am able to get the bass I love out of my system (2x Mackie SRM450's and a Cerwin Vega CVA-115 sub, second one coming soon!). I started playing around with the compressor and the EQ and I'm amazed at how great my speakers sound. I can't wait to learn how to fully use all the features. I've already told some of my DJ friends to get this. Also, the feedback suppression system on this is great. I DJ weddings and other formal and corporate events. I don't have any complaints so far!

Dunlop MC-403 MXR Custom Audio Electronics Power System Review

Dunlop MC-403 MXR Custom Audio Electronics Power System
Average Reviews:

I'm running a pretty big pedal board with 10 DC (all 9 volts) and 2 AC powered pedals (line6 M9 and Digitech Whammy Wah) and this does the job flawlessly. Absolutely no noise or interference. It replaced my Voodoo Labs AC power and Pedal Power II. This unit is very well designed and well built. The information I found on line was a little sketchy and careful inspection of the pics online weren't consistent. I took a chance on buying this hoping it would power everything I needed and luckily it worked out.
