Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String Black Maple Fretboard Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)This is not a boutique bass by any means. It's big, deep, dark and beautiful. The E-G strings even sound a little deeper than they do on 4 stringers. The low B is tight. I have D'Addario Chrome flats on it. I bought the .050-.105 set and then the low B .132 separately. It's crazy boomy but if you pluck an inch or an inch and a half from the pickups closer to the bridge, there's a nice sweet spot where it's not too boomy and you can get a really nice fundamental. It sustains really well, too, even with flatwounds. Mine is sunburst with a rosewood fretboard, not the one pictured.
I wish the truss rod access were in the headstock, but that is just my preference. And they should give you the option of sunburst with a maple fretboard. And maybe the option of a black pickguard, too. But nobody asked me.
Pickup height really affects the sound on this bass, so take the time to get it right and even...and get the low B just a little closer to the pickup than the other strings. This is a quality instrument.
