Readers of this review must read this with a couple of caveats: One, I have built my own carved, archtop guitar (single cutaway), and two, historically, the carved, archtop guitar was originally designed to achieve unamplified projection over other acoustic instruments in the orchestra.
There is not a significant demand for carved, archtop guitars with no cutaway so I had really expections for The Loar.
Pros: 1. Definitely the price - you can't beat it 2. The neck design makes the The Loar very playable
Cons: 1. The arched back and top have very slight arching compared to other archtops I've seen which results in less than optimal unamplified projection 2. I thought the natural finish would showcase the wood grains on the top, back and sides much more than it does - disappointing
Conclusion: This is a good guitar if you don't have another carved archtop in your collection. I love this style guitar, but, regretably, I returned this one because it didn't add enough to my small portfolio of instruments.
