(More customer reviews)I own 3 Jackson's, 2 USA and 1 "pro" model. The pro arch top soloist has a slightly thicker neck than the USA soloist but other than that it is almost every bit as good as the USA version. True it has perloid inlays instead of the awesome abalone inlays of my USA models but as a player it ranks right up there. I use it on stage along side my USA Jacksons and there is really almost no difference.
I play through a pair of Marshall full stacks with the JVM-410H head pre-amping to a Marshall EL34 100/100 dual mono-block power amp. I also use a Fulltone Fat Boost and a Fulltone Wah and a Digitech Time Bender. The Jackson pro soloist sounds great through this rig. The fret board is pure Jackson shred, I can do anything on this guitar that I can do on my USA soloist or the USA RR1. It's a great guitar for the price, and a grand less than the USA version.
If you can afford the USA Jackson's then buy them, I think they are the best playing guitars on the planet, but if you are short on cash the Japanese made Jackson's are a very high quality guitar for the price. The Floyd Rose is a real Floyd, not a cheapo 'licensed' version and the tuners are real Grover's too. The pickups on mine are real Seymour Duncan humbuckers not some off the wall garbage. The jack, switch and pots are all high quality hardware, nothing cheap on this guitar except the inlays.
The neck and headstock are bound, the quality of the binding is exquisite. Frets are premium nickel-silver jumbos, 24 fret neck, they are dressed perfectly for real low action. If this guitar had MOP or abalone inlays you would not be able to tell it was an import.

(More customer reviews)I'll start off by saying that my introduction to this instrument came through a rather 'odd' circumstance.
A younger classical guitar student owned it; he dropped it hard enough on a 'sharp surface' to crack the top (through no fault whatsoever of the instrument manufacturer) and was selling it for dirt cheap. While it appeared 'real bad', in reality, it was an easy enough fix to anyone familiar with how that process goes. OK, so after watching enough Buster B Jones video's (but not quite ready to jump into a Multiac), I've been looking for a decent cutaway nylon w/ electronics. I'm always a sucker for a fixer-upper project that saves money on something I want anyway. Sold.
In going through the motions of getting the crack under control, I got pretty familiar with how the guitar is put together. I'm not a guy who believes in 'super glue' or simply cleating the leading edge of a crack- I believe in proper repair and on-body refinish.
First things first, explored around the innards with a little flashlight and dental mirror to see what I was up against... Wow. This thing is VERY well built. The interior components were clearly put together with about as much deliberation as any given Martin or Taylor in terms of fit and finish. By contrast, take a look inside a cheapie sometime and compare. There is no comparison. The overall quality of materials- as far as tuners, neck, bridge, nut and saddle, etc- was all first rate, as was the overall fit and finish (joinery, binding, etc). This thing is an *extremely* well made, professional grade instrument.
Solid cedar top is absolutely gorgeous. Thankfully, the crack on mine was a sharp break, so a bit of time with some hide glue and an Xacto knife to turn the crack into a thin 'glueable channel'... Some more time with stainable wood glue to fill the crack flush with the top and installing some underside cleats along the crack line, the box is ready to rock. Will be undergoing a top refinish soon, but now that the crack is stable and the glue's dry, strung it up to see how it plays and sounds....
I noticed right off the bat that it comes with a high action, due to the Tusq (R) saddle being tall. Some people have complained about this but really, this is fairly standard for higher end instruments, where the saddle comes untuned from the factory with the expectation that the player will have it fit to their individual specifications. Nice touch. A bit of time with some abrasive paper, had it right where I wanted. The nut (also Tusq) was dead on.
The onboard Godin Q1 Saddle pickup sounds amazing. The plug is integrated with the bottom strap stud, while the battery compartment is smartly designed- a simple hatch, right next to the plug. Anyone who has had to change the damn battery in old Ovations will appreciate this. Open door, old battery out, new battery in- a 5 second process.
The acoustic tone was superb, amplified, just as good. Can't really 'explain' this, but go play one, you'll understand.
Overall, this is just a tremendous instrument at this price point. While I bought a 'fixer upper', having handled and played it for a bit now, I would not hesitate to recommend this at it's new price point.
This is a $1500 guitar for $600.

Roland Cube Street: Battery Powered Stereo Amp Review

(More customer reviews)When I first saw this amp, I thought, man, 5 watts ain't going to cut it. When I play on the street I use a 50 watt Crate Limo (a great amp, by the way). I couldn't understand why Roland would put out such an under powered product.
Now I understand. It is a LOUD little amp. I'm amazed. And it sounds so good. When I first got it, I plugged in a guitar and couldn't stop playing. The amp modeling and the effects are wonderful.
This amp is aimed at solo performers and street musicians, and would make a nice practice amp. This amp works well for the steet and small venues. If you're a typical loud, obnoxious guitar player, you might want to look elsewhere for a product that more suits your needs.

Dobro DWHOUNDRN Hound Dog Round Neck, Brown Review

(More customer reviews)While I visited Nashville a few weeks ago I went to a few of the local guitar shops and played quite a few resonator guitars. Many were used (as early as 1927!!) and were classics in their own right and came with price tags of at least $650 and most much more. All had great tone as expected for the asking price. One of my stops, of course, was at Gibson's Showcase store there and I played more than one of these new Dobro Hound Dogs for quite a long while inside their soundproof booth so I would have no distractions. I was very impressed with it's overall physical and sonic quality, especially considering the asking price. I would have purchased one immediately if it had not been for the facts that I'd be traveling back home by airplane and I was also really wanting to try a resonator guitar with a pickup and one was not available, at least in the time I had left in Nashville (one day). The Gibson store told me I could always buy one from them and have it shipped for $35 so I didn't feel it necessary to buy one right away. I still haven't finished trying out other resonator guitars yet but this guitar is still a strong contender!!

Taylor SBX1 Solid Body Classic Electric Guitar, White Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this guitar a couple of weeks ago and have given her a little time to settle in and find her place in my world. I was a bit skeptical when I first saw that Taylor was making a solid-body electric guitar. I was in the market for a new guitar and have owned nothing but acoustic guitars for the last 8 years so I figured it was time to get an electric guitar. I hold the belief that for the most part you get what you pay for and knew I wanted to get a guitar that would be with me for a long time. Fender Strats sound awesome but I personally don't like their feel. I'd love a Gibson Les Paul but was already looking at a chunk of change to buy one. I saw that this transparent white beauty was at my local guitar shop and decided that since I was "just looking" anyway, I would give her a try. I was thoroughly impressed. Taylor makes a great guitar. It may be that I come from playing acoustic guitars but I love the neck on this thing. The finish is gorgeous (you really need to see it in person to get the full effect). The pickups cover a broad set of sounds and the sound this thing produces is something I quite enjoy. Taylor makes a case specifically for it that it fits in perfectly with no slop. As of right now I'm just as in love with this thing as I was in the first place. I'd recommend it to anyone. One thing I've always heard about buying a guitar is make sure it feels good to YOU, and for ME this one is "just right".

Sierra SD33L Acoustic Left Handed Guitar Set - Sequoia series Review

(More customer reviews)Got this about 18 months ago - cheaper left-handed acoustics are hard to come by, and this brand was well-recommended on some guitar forums, so I took a leap. Overall, I don't regret it - it sounds quite good for the price, especially for a lam-top guitar. It sounds about aas good as a laminated Takamine a friend owns. Nice and clear, with decent dynamics - it can get quite loud, but quieter stuff is still audible. Of course, it doesn't have that resonance and brilliance that a tigher-grained solid top would have, but for being a lefty under $300, I can't complain about sound quality or setup.
The one disappointment was that the fit and finish could have been better - a couple of the inlays on the neck have small but noticable gaps in them, and the pickguard edges are a bit ragged. A quick fill-in of the inlays, and 30 seconds with some fine grit sandpaper would have fixed this. However, it doesn't affect the sound, and problems like this come with the territory when buying a budget guitar, so I can't fault it more than a star.

Guild GAD-F20 Acoustic Guitar (Natural) Review

(More customer reviews)I'd been looking for an all-solid smaller body guitar. So many sound boxy or cardboardy when they're an 00 or 0 size that I had been searching for some time. Then I ran across the Guild GAD-F20 at a local store that I had gone to to check out the F20's sibling, the M20, which is the same size but all mahogany. I played 'em both, and actually liked 'em both, but the F20 was the one that stuck in my mind. It has a bright but not overbright tone, was louder than a lot of small guitars, with a clean, articulate sound that I associate with Sitka and Mahogany. I went home to decide, and the sound of the F20 was the one that I couldn't stop thinking about, so I went back and got it, and it's been my favorite guitar ever since, even though I own several including a Taylor GC8. Which is a very nice guitar, btw, but I love the feel and sound of my Guild.
BTW, the F20 looks much nicer in person than the pics I've seen of it online. The wood is beautiful, the finish is perfect, and the maple binding glows - I've actually gotten complements on the binding several times. And the hard case is strong, light and fits the guitar tightly so it doesn't move when cased. Even though the nut is 1 11/16", and I usually prefer something a bit wider, it was still comfortable to play.
The Guild GAD-F20 isn't a guitar for those looking for something as loud as a dread. That being said, this is a well-made all-solid smaller guitar with a beautiful finish, nice appointments, and a typical crisp mahogany sound that offers more volume than many near its size. And of course, the F20 is an excellent value, too. The bottom line - if this sounds like what you're looking for, this guitar really delivers.
