Taylor Guitars 655-CE Jumbo 12 String Acoustic Electric Guitar Review

I wasn't even really looking for a new 12 string. My current one is 35 yrs old though it was always only just adequate. I first played a Taylor jumbo-style 12 (355) about 10 yrs ago and was taken aback by the huge quality of the sound so when I picked this one up I suspected that I would be pleased. What I did not expect was to be blown away. Maple guitars are typically bright but the pureness of the tone and the level of sustain of this guitar is unmatched by any I have ever played. A friend and fellow guitar player picked it up over the weekend and, without any prompting, said that this was the best 12 string guitar he had ever played and that I had hit a home run. I have to admit that this helped to assuage my guilt over spending the $3K and that my wife heard the comment also quieted the "why did you need another guitar...?" I played at least a other dozen 12 strings the day I bought this guitar (Martins, Guilds, other Taylors, new, used, etc.) but none could match this one for the tone that I love in a great 12. It also sounds pretty good plugged in (though you won't need to). Choosing a guitar is always a personal matter but you will be missing out on a very special instrument if you don't give this one a try. It will be the last one you'll ever need. ps. My other guitars are Martins and Gibsons so I do not have a Taylor bias.

I got my LGX-SA about 4 years ago and it has been an awesome guitar. The best part about it is people seeing it and going: "what is that?" They play it and go: "wow, how come i've never heard of this brand?" The guitar looks beautiful and plays great. It plays way different than a Gibson or Fender. I would relate it to a PRS or Parker. Some say its a little harder to play than a Gibson, but once you get use to it, it becomes very comfortable. The acoustic pic up sounds pretty good. I wouldnt say its the best pic up out there, but its nice to have on the guitar and is highly adjustable. You can get a pretty good sound out of it depending on what amp you are using.
My guitar has the custom seymour duncans on them. You can get a really nice clean sound out of them, but if you want a heavier sound you can get pretty strong EMG type sound as well. Very versatile pick ups.
The only thing I dont like about this guitar is the weight. Its pretty heavy and if you dont have a little muscle on your shoulder you may get tired after a while.
I have never used the synth on this guitar. I didnt buy it for the synth, I bought it for the overall quality and beauty. I will however try it out once I can afford the stupid Roland thing that costs an arm and a leg.

I have been playing guitar for over 20 years and have owned, and still do own, many high end guitars (Gibson / USA Fender / USA Jackson) etc. but since purchasing this this Godin xtsa, it has become my main 'go to' axe.
I purchased it for it's synth access (which it excels at) but combined with it's acoustic piezo output abilities and it's great overall electric sound, it is so versatile that it is hard to pick anything else up!
I love the overall feel and vibe of this guitar, kinda a cross between a Strat and Les Paul, but it works for me!
I got mine used and it was already well cared for and set up by a semi pro player.
It has an easy playing action and hangs well for playing on stage.
Godin states that this guitar is "a jack of all trades and master of all of them" and they are pretty much right on!
I only wish Godin would come out with a 24 fret guitar in the future, I would be all over that.
The only problem with Godin is that you may have to mail order the guitar, if you can find a dealer that has some in stock then try them out and you may be lucky enough to be able to 'cherry pick' your top, mine has the bonus of a nicely flamed top.
