Ludwig Junior 5 Piece Drum Set with Cymbals (Wine Red) Review

I have to say how impressed I am. This is not a "toy" kit. This is a real drum kit. It just happens to be small enough for children to play. I have been a drummer for 25 years and this kit is of the same quality as most of the kits I have ever played. Although I had no trouble setting it up I can understand that many people would like to have assembly instructions. I imagine many people who buy this kit for their child will not be drummers themselves and may not have put together other kits in their life. If you are buying this for your child and you are not familiar with drum kit assembly I recommend putting this together the night before you plan to give it to them, after they go to bed. It took me about an hour to put it together and I knew what I was doing.
With proper tuning these drums sound like a pro kit. It probably won't matter to your child at first, but when they start getting the hang of it you may want to look into how to properly tune drums. The internet has countless sites offering opinions on this subject. Do your homework then teach your child how to tune the drums for themselves.
The cymbal quality is the only thing about this set that is not pro quality. However, for the price, they will be fine as starter cymbals. You can't really expect pro cymbals as well for a total package price of $300. You could easily spend that much on cymbals alone.
We bought this kit for my son's third birthday. He can reach the pedals (which he cannot do on my full size set) and he has been having a blast acting like a little rock star. I'm sure this kit will be all he needs until he is big enough for a full size kit (if he sticks with it of course).

Lanikai S-TEQ Solid Spruce Series Tenor Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Ukulele Gloss Natural Review

Lanikai S-TEQ Solid Spruce Series Tenor Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Ukulele Gloss Natural

Wow! This uke has fantastic resonance and sound projection. This is WITHOUT amplification. The action came adjusted fairly low and will not require adjustment. It is a delight to play and will likely be a favorite of mine for quite some time. Amplifier is scheduled to arrive next week, but expect the uke to excel with it. Probably will not update unless the amplification does not meet my expectations.
Decided to add a tenor ukulele due to my pudgy fingers having difficulty with some chords on the smaller ukes. The ease of play is better than anticipated.
I do not believe it possible to be anything but delighted with the S-Teq!

Hamano H-100 Vintage 1920 Style Concert Ukulele (Mahogany/Rosewood) Review

Hamano H-100 Vintage 1920 Style Concert Ukulele (Mahogany/Rosewood)

I have teaching myself ukulele for about 3 months now.
This Hamano is my second ukulele. My first was a Kala soprano I bought from Amazon for about $50.
It had a nice sound, but it never stayed in tune. I took it to a guitar repair shop, and the neck was warping. The guy basically told it that it would cost $100 to fix. At that point, I was 6 weeks in, and was really enjoying the Uke, so I decided to buy something a TAD more expensive.
Word of mouth on the web lead me to consider a Mainland Uke or this Hamano. The Hamano Concert was at a local music school, and for the same price as Amazon, so I picked it up after being impressed with its fabtastic appearance, easy action and truly sweet sound.
This Hamano is very well constructed, has a very sweet, rich sound, and plays loud. In fact, my friend was just over with his Tenor Uke he got in Hawaii and he paid a lot more than I did and our ukes sound almost identical. He was VERY impressed. The "action" on this uke is very light-- very easy to learn to play on! Cannot say enough good stuff.
I broke down and bought a tenor uke from Mainland, and it has a very un-rich, hollow sound to it next to this Hamano. The Hamano is smaller but plays louder, and the tone is just really rich and beautiful. I am sorry I spent the money on the Mainland, frankly. I never play it. I just play the Hamano constantly and it is a real pleasure.
For beginners, I would suggest buying a plastic, $20-30 uke to see if you stick with it, and then I would unreservedly recommend this Hamano or its Tenor or Soprano cousins. The construction and finish are gorgeous.
The only con is: friction rather than geared tuners. They work, but I just prefer geared tuners.
You cannot get a better ukulele for this price.

Luna 23 Inch High-Tide Koa Concert Ukulele Review

As my first ukulele and as a fairly inexperienced musician I unfortunately cannot give specs such as "action was right on" or anything of that technical nature. I can say the instrument is absolutely beautiful. All of my musician friends are thoroughly impressed and much joy has been shared passing her around the room. She sounds great amped and even I have convinced her to make some music. Not only that but it feels good to support a company like Luna. I am very, very happy with my choice and am planning on buying one of the smaller luna ukes to keep at work for practice.

Luna 23 Inch Dolphin Concert Ukulele Review

I am an intermediate musician in general, but new to the world of ukuleles, so take this review for what it's worth. :) I am considering buying a ukulele in about this price range, to which end I spent a couple of hours playing this model of Luna in a local music store. I got pretty attached to it, my hand liked it, and it made me want more. In quality and overall value I would definitely compare it with other ukuleles in the same price range. The online price is usually about $50 less than at a brick-and-mortar store, where it can go for up to $299. The amazing design and also the electronics are a big plus. The tone and intonation are fine by me, and I'm very picky about that. I would agree with the previous review that the tone of the comparable Lanikai, the CK-C, is better in the sense of being more "idiomatic" to the ukulele, though I personally found the tone of this to be perfectly satisfactory. In all, I would recommend that there is no substitute for going to different stores and trying various brands and models out for yourself as opposed to buying any instrument purely based on someone else's impression. IMHO if you fall in love with this one, you will not be disappointed. Just my 2 cents. Happy ukeing!
